Curbside Cart Program

The City of Yellowknife is implementing a two cart waste system for single family dwellings in residential areas throughout Yellowknife as part of the Curbside Cart Program. These single family dwellings in Yellowknife will receive a black cart this fall to use for curbside pickup of their garbage. Green carts, used for pickup of organics, will be phased in over four years, with the first neighbourhood receiving pickup this fall. What time will the truck be picking up my garbage on collection day

Please don’t time the trucks as each day has different circumstances. Please have your residential garbage out by 7am on your collection day. Please ensure your garbage bin has clear access on your scheduled day.

How much garbage can I put out?

According to the City of Yellowknife garbage bylaw, you are permitted two 77L garbage bags per household per week.

What am I not allowed to throw out in residential garbage?

The following items are not allowed in your pickup bin; Animal waste, Carcasses, Metal, Small appliances, Yard waste, Batteries, Tires, Furniture, Carpet, Construction material, Oil, Hazardous Waste, Fluorescent light bulbs.

Why does my house smell after the sewer truck comes by?

In the winter the plumbing vents of your house freeze over with frost, because of this when the sewer trucks empties the sewage tank the traps of your plumbing get emptied as well. The smell you experiencing is coming from your sewage tank. To remedy this run water to fill those traps at each drain for sink, toilet, washing machine etc. Keep plumbing vents clear of frost and ice.

Why is my water turned off when my sewage tank is full?

It is a plumbing code to shut off your water when your sewage tank is full to prevent the over flowing or sewage backup in your house.

What do I do if my pipes are frozen?

Contact a local Steaming company and have your sewage line steamed clear of the ice blockage.

What does it mean if the driver left us a door tag?

This generally means that there is an issue of some sort with your sewage pumpout system. Read the tag carefully as it will tell you what the issue is. If you have additional questions give our office a call at 873-2811.

Where do I purchase the sewage pumpout fitting.

Pumpout fittings are available at the Kavanaugh office located at 341 Old Airport Road. They come in 2 sizes 3” and 4”, check the thread size of your pipe before coming by.
